CONSIDERATIONS - CLASS 1

1.    Describe two reasons managed care continues to grow in the United States.

2.    What is it that you want to know about managed care?  What are your concerns about managed care?  What kind of things have you heard about managed care?  What are the rumors that you have heard about managed care?  What is it that worries you about managed care?

3.    Define/compare and contrast:  Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organization (PPOs), Independent Practice Associations (IPAs), Third Party Administrator (TPA), Capitation and Fee-For-Service (FFS).

4.    Describe how managed care affects the following groups:  (1)  Employer Group; (2) Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) such as HMOs and PPOs/ Insurers; (3) Provider (Physicians, Hospital, Other); (4) Patient.  In addition, describe what laws and public policies, if any, should be considered for each of these categories.
